Let your light shine bright, so that others may see it is possible.
The most beautifully adorned candle, however great the potential cannot fulfill its purpose unless the wick, which lies inside, is lit.
Otherwise, as promising as it may seem, that possibility can only remain untapped potential, hidden away in the dark.
It is only when the flame appears bringing forth the light, that its purpose is known, illuminating all those who draw near.
And like the candle, there is an eternal light within each of us, that once lit, brings forth a unique and unmistakable radiance.
This happened to me the first time I walked into a meeting of people willing and wanting to be sober. They were vulnerable, open, and honest about their deepest, darkest struggles. I was terrified and intrigued at the same time.
They spoke about the power of surrender and the paradox that allowed them to rise up. I could see the glimmer of light behind their eyes, reaching out their hand to share their experience, strength, and hope.
As they reclaimed their lives and dreams, I could feel the possibility that I too might be able to do the same.
For the first time in my life, I felt like I belonged somewhere. They wanted nothing from em except that I stay sober and find a Higher Power of my own understanding and pass on what I was freely given.
That was 37 years ago and the start of an inward journey that continues to this day And what gives me the greatest joy is helping others.
Recovery happens through being of Service to others, and with that comes the experience of Unity, which is the awareness that I am One with all Life. There is no more aloneness. These became the cornerstones for a happy, meaningful and sober life.
What compels your light to shine? What is it within you that transforms the darkness into light? What is the spark that ignites your soul that dwells so deep within?
Is it found in the mystical sound of music or the inspired movement of dance? Does it come in the form of the written or spoken word?
Maybe you’ve discovered it in the depths of solitude during meditation. Or do you come fully alive as you walk among the majestic sycamores and winding rivers?
Perhaps you shine brightest in the caring of little children, in the feeding of the hungry, or taking care of those who are lonely, sick, or the aged in need of refuge.
It is the discovery and sharing of our talents and gifts with others in and out of sobriety that allows us to shine our brightest. They make us feel fully awake, totally energized, and purpose-filled.
Those high vibrational feelings become our compass, our North Star. They are the indication that we are now aligned with our Soul’s purpose.
And this, my friend, this is how we are meant to walk the earth.
My affirmation for today.
I allow my light to illuminate everyone and everything. I am now unified with all that is, being filled to overflowing with the joy of my Soul.
Let us remember what is possible for one, is possible for all.
May we be happy, joyous, and free.
With Love,
Joseph
